Starting date: 16 May 2016
Ending date: 18 May 2016
Overview
The purpose of this workshop is to build the confidence, course design and facilitation skills of NGO staff to deliver relevant and effective training. The training approach is highly practical, participatory and fun! We focus on real issues and help participants to use the techniques covered, rather than just discuss them.
The course is limited to a small group so that we can be sure to meet the needs of individual participants. We use a wide variety of learning methods to stimulate interest and meet the differing learning styles of participants – including group problem-solving activities and discussions, quizzes, games, illustrated presentations and demonstration of techniques.
During the course, participants will work in small groups to design and develop, with full support and guidance, a short training session to be delivered on the final day.
Program Content/Learning Objectives
The core components of the course include:
- course design basics: learning objectives, session plans, selection of approach
- how to help our learners learn
- participatory training techniques
- how to demystify technical concepts and information
- using resource materials to support learning
- group facilitation skills
- practical presentations
Course content will be adapted to reflect the interests and learning priorities of those attending the course.
The learning objectives involve:
- creating learning objectives and a session plan for a training session
- creating effective resource materials to support the learning process
- demonstrating at least 15 different inter-active training techniques
- delivering a participatory-style training session, using plain language, to build skills and knowledge
- describing the stages in the ‘Five Questions’ course design framework and the ‘CPR’ approach to creating participatory training
- explaining how adults learn and how that has an impact on course design
- appreciating the importance of using plain language when training non-specialists in technical subjects
- recognizing that technical training doesn’t have to be boring and is more effective when a practical, participatory approach is used.
